[1 day, 1 station] Hempstead heath

Aujourd’hui, on prend un bon bol d’air frais dans un des plus grand parc de Londres: Hampstead Heath.

Today, let’s get some fresh air in one of London’s largest park, Hampstead Heath.

Hampstead heath est situé au Nord de Londres. Il m’a bien fallu 3 heures pour le traverser d’ouest en est.

Hampstead Heath is located in North London. Although it took me three hours to cross from the western part to the eastern one.
La parc compte plusieurs bassins dont trois ouverts à la baignade. Le bassin ci -dessous est le bassin réservé aux hommes. Plus loin, vous trouverez le bassin réservé aux femmes et à l’entrée celui qui est ouvert à tous.

The hampstead side of the park has three bathing. The one you are seing below is the pond opened for men only. Further, you will find the pool for women and at the entrance one that is open to all.
Vous pourriez me dire « C’est drôle que tu aies pris le temps de faire des photos au bassin réservé aux hommes » mais je ne vous entends pas alors on continue la visite.
You could argue the reason why I took the time to take a picture in the men’s bathing pond…but I am not hearing any complaints so let’s move on.

Le parc s’étend sur 320 hectares. Il y a des plaines à perte de vue. J’ai eu l’impression d’être au millieu de nulle part. Je vous conseille de télécharger ou imprimer le plan du parc pour mieux vous y retrouver.

The park covers 320 hectares. There are lots of plains. I had the impression of being in the middle of nowhere. I advise you to download or print a map not to be lost.
L’un des points phares du parc est le domaine de Kenwood. Elle a d’abord appartenu au comte de Mansfield (aristocratie londonienne) avant d’être rachetée par Lord Iveagh, un homme d’affaire philanthrope anglo-irlandais. La vila fait maintenant partie du patrimoine anglais. Elle est maintenant gérée par une association appelée « English Heritage ». Elle est maintenant ouverte au public et l’entrée est gratuite.
One of the major attractions of the park is the Kenwood House. It first belonged to the Earl of Mansfield (London aristocracy) before being bought by Lord Iveagh, an Anglo-Irish philanthropist businessman. The Georgian vila is now part of the National Patrimony. It is managed by an association called « English Heritage ». It is open to the public and admission is free.

J’ai été impressionnée par l’architecture de bâtiment et ainsi que la décoration intérieur mêlant les influences neo classiques, asiatiques notamment. Mais, j’ai été particulièrement impressionnée par ce tableau du XVIII.
I was impressed by the building, the Georgian architecture and the interior design that combines neo classical and somehow asian influences. But I was particularly impressed by this peint from the XVIII century.

Il m’a interpellé car il est rare pour l’époque de voir le portrait d’une femme noire. Elle n’a pas l’air d’être une servante bien qu’elle porte un panier de fruits. Elle semble traité à l’égal de la femme blanche. Elle s’appelle Dido Belle. Son histoire est passionnante.
He caught my attention because it is rare for this period to see the portrait of a black woman. She does not seem to be a servant even if she is holding a fruit basket. She seems to treated as equal with the white woman. Her name is Dido Belle. Its history is fascinating.

Dido est l’arrière petite nièce du Comte de Mansfield. La femme blanche sur ce tableau est sa cousine. Dido est le fruit d’une relation entre Sir John Lindsay, neveu du comte et une esclave du nom de Maria Belle. De retour des caraïbes, le jeune noble demande à son oncle de garder Dido pendant ses periples en tant qu’admiral dans la marine.
Dido is the great grand niece of the Earl of Mansfield. The white woman in this picture is his cousin. Dido is the result of a relationship between John Lindsay, nephew of count and an African slave named Maria Belle. Back from the caribbean, the young nobleman asks his uncle to keep Dido as he is promoted Admiral.

Dido a un statut particulier au sein de Kenwood. Etant membre de la famille, elle a accès à une education noble. Elle est presque considéré comme un membre à part entière de la famille Mansfield. J’ai bien dit « presque ». Elle fait partie du personnel de maison bien qu’elle est de hautes responsabilités ( gestion de la laiterie, dame de compagnie de sa cousine).
Dido has a special status in Kenwood. As a member of the family, she has access to a worthy education. She is almost considered as a full member of the Mansfield family. I said « almost ». She actually is part of the house staff and she has high responsibilities (managing the dairy, lady companion of her cousin).

Bon si on s’arrête là vous vous dites « bon sympa mais elle a rien révolutionné la petite »… C’est que je me suis dit au début. Mais, vous ai je préciser que le Comte de Mansfield est aussi juge de profession? Dido est décrit comme une jeune femme érudit et petillante. Le comte l’adore. Et je pense que Dido a influencé le comte de Mansfield dans sa manière de percevoir les esclaves. En 1772, il prend une décision qui selon les historiens a favorisé l’ abolition de l’esclavage. Il donne raison à un esclave qui a refusé de suivre son maitre aux Etats-Unis. Il crée une jurisprudence qui donne des droits aux esclaves ! Et si on y réfléchit bien, à partir de cette date on considère un esclave comme un être humain à part entière! Il n’est plus un meuble ou un animal de compagnie que l’on peut déplacer à son gré… énorme!… »Passionnant » Allez on reprend la visite.

Okay so if we stop there you would propably say « good fun but it’s nothing revolutionized here » … Because this what I told myself at the beginning. But have I point out that the Earl of Mansfield is also a professional judge? Dido is described as a young woman scholar and bubbly. The Earl loves her. And I think Dido has influenced the Earl of Mansfield in his way of perceiving the slaves. In 1772, he makes a decision that according to historians favored the abolition of slavery. It vindicates a slave who refused to follow his master in the United States. It creates a law that gives rights to slaves! And if you think about it, from that date slaves are considered as a human being! It is no longer a piece of furniture or a pet that can move at will … huge progress, don’t you think?… « Fascinating » I said. Shall we continue the tour?

La butte du parlement (Parliament Hill) est un point culminant du parc. De là haut, on a une vue sur les principaux buildings de la city.
The Parliament Hill is the highest point of the park. From up there, you will have an impressive view of the main buildings of the city.
